Temple Run 2 runs across 21 maps and close to 100 unlockable characters, all built on one rule: outrun the giant demon monkey or restart the run.

Temple Run 2: Endless Escape is a 3D endless runner from Imangi Studios, the same American studio that launched the original Temple Run in 2011. Version 7.2.0 for Android keeps the formula that made the series one of the most downloaded mobile games of the decade: swipe to turn, jump, and slide while an idol-thief sprints through temple paths, zip-lines, and mine carts. The sequel adds tilt steering, procedurally generated paths so no two runs match, and a progression layer of coins, gems, power-ups, and permanent ability upgrades. It runs fully offline for standard runs and needs a connection only for Global Challenges and leaderboards.

Every map in Temple Run 2 and what each one throws at you

Temple Run 2 has 21 maps in the global release, and which one you start on depends on the season in your timezone, not your choice. Frozen Shadows loads as the default in winter, Blazing Sands takes over in summer. Each map is a different environment with its own obstacle mix and its own set of collectible artifacts, so switching maps changes the run, not just the scenery.

Sky Summit was the first map, shipping with the game in January 2013. It splits into five zones (the main temple path, the woods, the aqueduct, the log bridge, and the mineshaft) and holds 48 artifacts across charms, totems, fauna, flora, and armor, the largest artifact count of any map. Frozen Shadows trades that mountain temple for ice paths and frozen obstacles, while Blazing Sands drops you into desert dunes with raging rivers and deadly gaps. Lost Jungle packs dense vegetation, and Pirate Cove sets the chase on a tropical island.

Seasonal maps rotate in and out. Spooky Summit is the Halloween map, built from three zones (a fairground, a farm, and a corn maze) with 15 artifacts grouped into Fair Foods, Fair Games, and Fair Animals. Winter Toyland returns for the holidays, and Enchanted Palace, added in August 2025, even has a night-time variant that swaps in when it is night in your timezone. Across every map you face the same hazard types: sharp turns that punish slow reactions, zip-line stretches where you tilt for coins, mine-cart rails steered by tilting at each fork, plus waterfalls and jets of fire.

The best characters in Temple Run 2 and how to unlock each one

Most of the close-to-100 characters in Temple Run 2 are cosmetic, but four early ones each unlock a power-up when you buy them, which makes them the ones that actually change how you play. The rest are skins, seasonal grabs, and event collabs.

  • Guy Dangerous is the free starter, the classic adventurer you run with from the first tap, no unlock needed.
  • Scarlett Fox costs 5,000 coins and unlocks the Boost power-up, which is why she is usually the first purchase players make.
  • Barry Bones costs 15,000 coins and unlocks the Coin Bonus power-up, handy once you are farming for ability upgrades.
  • Karma Lee costs 25,000 coins and unlocks the Score Bonus power-up, the priciest of the coin-unlock trio.
  • Usain Bolt and Bruce Lee sit behind real-money packs rather than coin walls. Usain Bolt brings his own Bolt Boost ability that works much like running with Boost equipped.

Promo and seasonal characters fill out the rest. Maria Selva arrived through a National Geographic Kids tie-in, Santa Claus appears during the holiday window, and recent updates added Viking-themed runners like Freya Coldheart, Sigur Frostbeard, King Fafnir, and Queen Astrid. None of these change your stats, so pick by the power-up unlock first and the look second.

Every power-up explained and which one to upgrade first

Temple Run 2 has six in-run power-ups, and they fill a meter in the top-right corner as you collect coins, then activate with a double-tap once the meter turns green. Knowing what each protects against decides whether a power-up saves a record run or wastes a pickup.

  • Shield blocks one trip, jump, or slide hazard, then disappears. It does not save you from a missed turn or a fall off a cliff or bridge, so it is a single-hit safety net, not invincibility.
  • Boost fires you forward at high speed with full invulnerability for a set distance, clearing turns and hazards automatically. At Level 1 it covers 250m, scaling to 750m at Level 5. It will not steer you onto coins, so collecting at that speed is on you.
  • Coin Magnet auto-pulls every nearby coin with no tilting, unlocks once your character reaches Level 5, and gains duration with each upgrade.
  • Coin Bonus (Mega Coin) drops an instant batch of coins, worth 50 at Level 1 and rising to 150 at Level 5.
  • Score Bonus adds an instant point chunk scaled by your current multiplier.
  • Gem Bonus grants an instant 2 gems and unlocks at character Level 10, the rarest of the six.

For permanent abilities upgraded with coins, push Coin Value first. At max it turns coins red (double value) after 1,000m and blue (triple value) after 2,000m, which compounds every later upgrade. Coin Magnet duration and Pickup Spawn come next, since more magnets and more frequent pickups feed the whole loop.

How coins and gems work and the fastest way to farm them

Coins and gems do different jobs in Temple Run 2, and mixing them up is the most common way new players stall. Coins are the everyday currency for buying characters and permanent ability upgrades. Gems are the premium currency, and their main use is the Save Me revive that lets you keep a strong run alive after a crash.

The catch with gems is the Save Me cost doubles with each revive in a single run, so two or three saves can drain a stockpile fast. The standard advice from the community is simple: do not spend a Save Me unless you are already 20 to 25 percent toward your record score, otherwise the gems vanish and you still fall short. Using Save Me also spins a bonus wheel that can return coins, power-ups, or rarely a gem, and you can pay another gem to re-spin if the result is poor.

To farm both currencies faster, lean on Coin Value plus Coin Magnet so long runs print red and blue coins past the 1,000m and 2,000m marks. Green gems sometimes hang in mid-air during a run, so grab them on sight. Completing objectives raises your level, bumps your score multiplier, and pays out free coins and gems, which makes the objective screen the most reliable gem source outside the Level 10 Gem Bonus power-up.

How to get a higher score and survive longer runs

Score in Temple Run 2 is distance multiplied by your score multiplier, plus coins, which is why a long clean run beats a short flashy one every time. The fastest way to climb the leaderboard is to raise your multiplier through objectives while training the reflexes that keep a run going past the speed ramp.

Read the path ahead instead of staring at your character, since the game accelerates the longer you survive and late obstacles arrive in clusters. For cliff-hanger sections where only one side is safe, jump as the gap appears and lean toward the solid side mid-air, which lands you more reliably than a flat tilt at high speed. Near turns, drill the jump-and-slide combos, because hazards often sit right before an intersection. In mine-cart stretches, tilt at each fork rather than swiping.

Two situational tricks help on very fast runs. Pair a maxed Coin Magnet with Boost so the moment you grab a magnet you can punch through a hazard-heavy stretch while still vacuuming coins. If the speed becomes unmanageable, a single deliberate trip on a roof or wall lets the giant demon monkey close in but slows you enough to recover control, just never trip twice in a row.

What’s new in version 7.2.0

Version 7.2.0 centers on a limited-time return of the Blazing Sands map, the desert run with treacherous paths, raging rivers, and steep drops. Fan-favorite runners Karma Lee and Barry Bones charge back into the temple alongside it. The update also adds two seasonal pets timed to the calendar: the Mama Bear pet tied to Mother’s Day and the Eagle Centennial pet tied to Memorial Day. A fresh set of Global Challenges ships with the build for higher-tier rewards.

This follows version 1.131.0 from April 3, 2026, which ran the “Perilous Pollution” event at Pirate Cove, a go-green cleanup theme for the tropical map. Before that, the December 2025 holiday build (1.127.1) brought back the Winter Toyland map and a daily-surprise Advent Calendar. Seasonal maps and events rotate out after their window, so the playable map list shifts with each update.

Temple Run 2 MOD APK features

This MOD removes the coin and gem grind that gates most of Temple Run 2 and opens the full character and map roster from the first run, aimed at players who want every map, every runner, and unlimited revives without weeks of farming. Below are the changes that matter most.

Unlimited Coins and Gems

Both currencies sit maxed instead of trickling in, so you skip saving 5,000 coins for Scarlett Fox or 25,000 for Karma Lee and stop rationing gems. You can max Coin Value, Boost Distance to its 750m Level 5, and Coin Magnet duration straight away. The biggest payoff is the Save Me revive, whose gem cost doubles every use in stock: with unlimited gems you can revive run after run while chasing a record on Sky Summit instead of dying on a missed turn.

All Characters Unlocked

The full roster of nearly 100 runners opens from the start, including the real-money characters Usain Bolt with his Bolt Boost ability and Bruce Lee, which the stock version locks behind paid packs. There are no 15,000-coin walls for Barry Bones or 25,000-coin walls for Karma Lee, so you can pick any runner purely by the power-up it unlocks rather than what you can currently afford.

All Maps Unlocked

All 21 global maps become selectable at any time, including the seasonal Spooky Summit, Winter Toyland, and the night-variant Enchanted Palace. Stock Temple Run 2 forces a starting map based on your timezone’s season (Frozen Shadows in winter, Blazing Sands in summer) and gates others behind coins. The MOD drops that restriction, so you can farm the 48 artifacts on Sky Summit or run a desert map in mid-winter whenever you want.

Immortality (No Death)

Your runner ignores trips, cliff falls, river drops, and the giant demon monkey, so a run only ends when you choose to stop. The stock Shield blocks just one trip hazard and never saves a fall, which makes this a far bigger change than any in-run power-up. It is most useful for grinding distance-based Global Challenges or sweeping every artifact on a single map in one uninterrupted run.

Note: the table below lays out the core gap between stock Temple Run 2 and the MOD build, so you can see exactly which limits the MOD lifts before installing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Temple Run 2 MOD APK safe to install?

A MOD is a modified build of the original game, not the official Imangi Studios release, so treat it like any third-party file and scan it before installing. The safest path is to keep your normal account separate from the MOD and check the APK signature on install. Many builds also list an anti-ban flag, though that is never a guarantee.

Will the MOD ban my account or wipe my progress?

Temple Run 2 uses Global Challenges and leaderboards that need a connection, and unlimited coins, gems, or no-death runs can flag a synced account. To protect your main save, run the MOD as a guest or on a separate account. Switching between the stock and MOD versions can also reset local progress, so back up before swapping.

Is Temple Run 2 free to play and does it work offline?

Yes. The base game is free with optional in-app purchases for coin and gem packs and certain characters like Usain Bolt. Standard runs work fully offline, which is useful while traveling or saving data. You only need a connection for Global Challenges, leaderboards, and event participation, and the game syncs that progress once you reconnect.

How many maps and characters does Temple Run 2 have?

The global release has 21 maps, from the launch map Sky Summit to seasonal ones like Spooky Summit and Winter Toyland, with four extra maps exclusive to the Chinese version. The character roster sits close to 100 runners, though only a handful (Scarlett Fox, Barry Bones, Karma Lee, and the paid Usain Bolt) actually unlock or carry a gameplay power-up.
